Intricate story that takes place at the time of the unification of Sicily with Italy. On his return journey to Sicily, one of Garibaldi's former soldiers takes the place of a Bourbon emissary who had been killed by bandits, so as to spy the enemy's plans. He is discovered and condemned to death but is saved by the declaration of one of the bandits.
