The background is that of fights for national independence during 1848-49. The story is about a Piedmontese baroness who is married to a nobleman of the Papal States. After being slandered by her wicked sister-in-law, she is forced to become a singer; she is blinded by gunfire and, finally, is forgiven and regains her sight.
